Judy Moody Declares Independence

주디 시리즈가 점점 좋아지려 하네요.

이왕이면 나오는 순서대로 읽으면 좋겠지만, 그렇지 않아도 스토리를 이해하는데 별 어려움은 없답니다.

이번에는 주디가 가족과 함께 보스턴에 방문을 하게 되어요.

그곳에서 어떻게 미국이 영국에서 벗어나려고 독립을 쟁취했는지에 대해서 배우게 됩니다.

영국과 Tax 문제로 시작된 독립 쟁취는 미국인이 영국인의 차를 바다에 버리면서 부터 시작되었다고 Tea Party ship에서 주디와 동생은 그들의 조상이 했던것처럼 차를 바닷가에 버리는 모션도 취하고 그런답니다.

그러다가 영국인 소녀 Tori 와 주디가 친구가 되면서 나라를 건너뛰는 우정을 맺기도 하구요.

주디는 미국이 영국에서 독립한것 처럼 자신도 부모님으로부터 독립을 요구하지만, 부모님은 주디가 좀더 자신의 행동에 책임을 질수 있을때까지는 안된다고 말씀하시지요.

솔직히 주디의 요구는 좀 무리가 있었어요.

하지만 주디가 동생에 있어 책임을 다 하는 행동을 보일때 부모님도 조금씩 주디에게 독립적인 행동을 할수 있게 허락해준답니다.

미국의 역사도 배우고 아이들이 어떻게 독립해나가는지(부모에게나 아이들에게나) 도움이 되는 책 같아요.

아서가 Francine에게 마시매로우라고 놀리는 바람에 Francine가 아서에게 많이 화가 났답니다.

그래서 아서에게 말도 안해요.

하지만 학교 숙제때문에 파트너가 되어버렸네요.

서로 말은 안한채 도서관에 갔다가 실수로 도서관 문 닫는 시간을 잃어버리게 됩니다.

결국 둘은 도서관에 갇히게 되고, 위험한 순간에 서로 의지가되면서 다시 화해하게 된답니다.

어렸을때 한번쯤은 이런일로 친구들과 다퉜던 기억이 있는지라 많이 동감이 되더군요.

제가 두번째로 읽은 Judy Moody 시리즈예요.

Judy Moody는 의사가 꿈이랍니다.

이번 에피소드의 소제목들은 M.D.를 이니셜로 가지고 있어요.

그래서 제목이 Judy Moody, M. D 인가봅니다.

학교에 가기 싫어 꾀병을 부리다가 정말 병이 난 Judy Moody는 실제로 병이 난것이 자신의 생각보다 좋지 않다는 것을 알게 되지요^^

학교에서 사람의 몸에 대해서 배우게 되는데요, 그러면서 병원에 견학도 가게되고요.

사람의 몸에 관한 주제를 가지고 발표도 합니다.

Judy Moody는 동생의 말린 탯줄을 가지고 와서 탯줄에 관한 주제를 발표해요.

아직까지 주디의 발표결과를 보면 주디가 똑똑하고 재치가 있다는것을 알수가 있답니다.
(전편에 읽었을때 자신의 콜라주에 동생이 주스를 업질렀는데, 주스 자국을 자신이 태어난 주로 바꾸는 기지를 보이기도 하고요.)

In this entry in the popular chapter-book series, Judy Moody is learning at school about "Our Amazing Body: From Head to Toe." Before her class is done with its health unit, Judy has gotten a fake cast on her arm on the class trip to the hospital emergency room, shared (over his strenuous objections) her younger brother's "bellybutton" for show and tell (well, "that thing that falls off your bellybutton when you're born"), tried to cure his tonsillitis by feeding him dried-up prunes, performed a near-fatal operation on a catsup-smeared zucchini, fallen for her friend's faked attempt to clone a guinea pig, and forgiven him once he sticks by her through her own bout with tonsillitis. Although Judy's verbal mannerisms can occasionally become irritating (e.g., her repeated exclamation of "RARE!"), she's an irrepressible and indomitable personage whose activities always make for fun reading. Readers will wish they could be in Judy's class with Mr. Todd, excited to learn all she's learning in the adventure of third-grade science.

Arthur Accused!

 

평소 탐정이 되고 싶어했었던 아서의 친구 Buster 가 없어진 모금함에 대한 의심을 받은 아서가 받자 아서의 무죄를 증명 하기위해서 벌어지는 이야기를 다루었어요.

그래서인지 챕터마다 Buster의 생각이 먼저 서술되고 이야기가 진행됩니다.

솔직히 없어진 모금함때문에 아서가 소풍을 가지 못하는 대목에서는 좀 답답하게 느껴지더군요.

확실하지 않은 상황에서 아이의 무죄를 생각지 않고 무조건 몰아세우는 어른의 태도는 그리 바람직해보이지 않았거든요.

물론 Buster가 사라진 모금함을 찾아내면서 아서는 소풍에 갈수 있었지만, 어떤면에서는 아이들이 어른에 대해 신뢰를 못 받지 않을까?하는 생각을 해봤습니다.^^

어른들도 아이의 생각을 존중해줘야할것 같습니다.

서점에서 이 책을 봤을때, 재미있겠다고 생각했어 선택한 책이었어요.

시리즈로 있는 책인데 굳이 순서대로 읽을필요는 없답니다.

하지만 처음 선택한 책은 제일 먼저 나온 책이네요.

Judy Moody는 초등학교 3학년인 주인공의 이름이예요.

Stink이라는 남동생도 있고, 또래보다 조숙하고 자기 표현능력도 있는 소녀랍니다.

학교생활을 하면서 자신이 싫어하던 친구에 대해서 다른면을 발견하게 되어 친해지기도 합니다.

또래 아이들이 읽으면 더 재미있겠다는 생각이 들어요.

자신에 대한 콜라주를 만들어가면서 자신을 스스로 돌아보는 마음도 생기게 하구요.

재미있고, 읽기 쉬워서 앞으로 주디 시리즈를 더 읽을 생각이예요.

McDonald's (the Beezy books) comical novel introduces the entertainingly mercurial Judy Moody. The book itself has a look as fresh as its heroine (a compact trim size and an inventive jacket design die-cut that reveals the bright green and orange of the cover below). From the start, Judy devises intriguing solutions to her dilemmas. The book opens on the first day of third grade, with a hilarious spread in pen-and-ink wash showing only Judy's feet sticking up from her bed as her mother attempts to rouse her from the doorway. What to wear? Judy has no T-shirt to rival her classmates' shirts touting their exotic summer destinations, so the heroine decorates a plain white T with a drawing of a shark and the words "I Ate a Shark." For a "Me collage" at school, she insists that her cat, Mouse, is too old to qualify for the "My Favorite Pet" slot; unable to find a two-toed sloth, she purchases a Venus flytrap and proceeds to overfeed it raw hamburger. Her relationship to her best friend, Rocky, and her second-grade brother, Stink, also propel the plot in diverting directions, and the dialogue is spot-on (e.g., when aspiring doctor Judy gets her kit in the mail, Stink asks, "Why can't I ever be Elizabeth Blackwell, First Woman Doctor?" and she responds, "For one thing, you're a boy"). It's hard to imagine a mood Judy couldn't improve.
