■작가 소개■
아르헨티나의 소설가로 ,20세기를 대표하는 문학자이기도 한 보르헤스와 SF•환상 소설을 자랑으로 여긴 소설가 카사레스의 두 명이 합작 할 때에 사용한 펜 네임이다.
당시 라틴 아메리카를 시작으로 하는 구미의 사상•문학을 소개하는 잡지로서 유명했던〈술〉잡지 의 편집장을 맡아 아르헨티나의 문단에 있어서의 대표적인 존재인 빅토리아•오칸포의 소개로 알게 된 두 명은 원래 문학을 좋아해서 매주 같이 식사를 하면서 문학에 대한 담화를 하게었다고 한다.
그리고 그러한 까닭으로〈데스테이엔포〉라는 이름의 문예 잡지를 공동으로 출판하게 되지만 유감스럽지만 이것은 3호까지 밖에 계속되지 못했다
그러고 다음에든 둘이서 단편소설을 써 보려고 합의하고 장님이라 어둠안에 갇힌 명탐정 맥스 캐러도스를 모방하여 감옥에 갇힌 명탐정 돈 이시드로 파로디를 생각해 내고 이 캐릭터를 주인공으로 하는 G.K.체스타톤풍의 단편을 몇개인가 쓴다.
그리고 그것이 앞에서 소개한 빅토리아 오칸포의 눈에 띄어 1942년〈술〉잡지에 「황도 12궁」과「골리 아드킨의 밤」의 2편이 게재되고 같은 해 「돈 이시드로 파로디 여섯 개의 난사건」이라고 하는 타이틀로 동사로부터 단행본으로서 간행되게 된다.
그 후도 두 명은 공저을 계속해 몇개의 단편집과 영화 시나리오를 썻다고 한다.

아돌포 비오이 카사레스 (Adolfo Bioy Casares)


1914년 아르헨티나의 부에노스아이레스에서 태어났다. 열한 살 때 이미 연애소설 <이리스와 마르가리타>를 쓰고, 부에노스아이레스 대학교에 입학해 법학을 전공하지만, 마르틴 사카스트루라는 필명으로 <미래를 향해 열일곱 발을 쏴라>(1933)를 출간한 후 철학과 문학에만 전념하기 위해 학교를 그만둔다. 1934년 단편집 <혼돈>을 내고, 후에 아내가 되는 실비나 오캄포가 삽화를 그린 단편집 <집에서 만든 석상>(1936)을 출간한다. 첫 번째 소설이자 대표작 중 하나인 <모렐의 발명』(1940)을 발표하면서 큰 명성을 얻었고, 이 작품으로 제1회 부에노스아이레스 문학상을 수상했다.

환상과 현실이 멋지게 조화를 이룬 문학 세계를 구축한 비오이 카사레스는 호르헤 루이스 보르헤스와 더불어 아르헨티나 소설계의 대부로 일컬어지는데, 그와 보르헤스는 1932년의 첫 만남 이후 평생의 지기로 지내며, 함께 전위적 비평지 「철 아닌 때」를 발간하고, 시집을 편집했으며, 오노리오 부스토스 도메크라는 필명으로 <이시드로 파로디 씨의 여섯 가지 문제>(1942), <부스토스 도메크의 연대기>(1967) 등의 작품을 공동 집필 하기도 했다.

주요 소설로는 <모렐의 발명> 외에 카니발의 몽상적인 분위기 속에서 현실과 환상을 혼동하는 인물들을 그린 <영웅들의 꿈>(1954), 수술을 통해 사람들의 영혼을 바꾸는 실험을 다룬 <햇빛 아래서 잠자기>(1973)를 비롯해 <라플라타 어느 사진사의 모험>(1985) 등이 있으며, 단편집으로는 <도주 계획>(1945), <위대한 천사>(1967), <여자들의 영웅>(1978), <러시아 인형>(1991) 등이 있다.

우리의 일상에 숨겨진 또 다른 현실로서의 환상을 그림으로써 무한한 세계의 법칙을 밝히고자 했던 비오이 카사레스의 문학 세계는 보르헤스의 그늘에 가려 제대로 평가받지 못하다가, 보르헤스의 사후에야 비로소 다시 조명을 받으면서 전 세계 비평계로부터 찬사를 받았다. 1981년 프랑스 레지옹 도뇌르 훈장을 받았고, 1990년에 스페인의 세르반테스 상, 1991년에 멕시코의 알폰소 레예스 상 등 다수의 문학상을 수상했다. 1999년에 세상을 떠났다.

추리소설 전문 출판사 해문에서 나온 파일로 번스 시리즈.아마 2~3권 정도 추가 기획이 있었나 본데 판매가 부진해서인지 더이상 나올 기색이 없어 안습이다.파일로 번스시리즈는 동서DMB에서도 나왔는데 총 12권중 8권이 번역된것 같다.해문본중 가든살인사건은 자유 추리본으로 이미있고 드래곤은 같은 해문에서 아동용으로 번역된바 있지만 완역은 아마 처음이 아닐까 십다.마찬가지로 카지노 살인사건도 국내 최초 번역같은데 나머지 번역안된 4권도 어서 나왔으면 한다.

본명은 에드워드 존 모톤 드랙스 플랜캣 라고 하며 수도 더블린의 북방 미즈군에 영지를 가진 1439년부터 계속 되는 아일랜드의 명문 귀족인 던세이니 남작가의 제18 대 당주이기도 하다.로드 던세이니라고 하는 것은 그의 귀족으로서의 칭호를 펜 네임에 이용한 것이라고 한다.
미즈에 있는 12 세기에 지어진 노르만풍의 고성과 잉글랜드의 켄트에게 있는 저택에서 인생의 대부분을 보냈다고 한다.
소설가로서 뿐만이 아니고, 시인, 극작가, 번역가, 에세이스트로서도 활약하는데 폭넓은 분야에서 문학적인 실적을 많이 남기고 있다.한편으로는 신장 6피트 4인치라고 하는 큰 몸으로 군인으로서도 활약했으며 또 스포츠맨으로 세계 여행을 떠나는 등, 활동적인 인물이기도 하다.
군인으로서는 왕실 근위 연대의 대장으로 사격의 명수이기도 했으며 남아프리카 전쟁이나 제1차 세계 대전에서는 부상을 하면서도 사력을 다해 부대를 지휘했고,또 체스의 솜씨는 런던의 체스 토너먼트에서 당시의 세계 챔피언과 대전할 정도였다고 한다.

그의 작가 활동은 크게 나누어 3기로 나눌 수 있는데 우선 초기의 무렵은 현실과는 완전히 무관계의 별세계를 무대로 한 신화적,우화적인 단편을 많이 발표했다.처녀작으로 1905년의 「The Gods of Pegana」로부터1919년 간행된 「Tales of Three Hemispheres 」까지의 합계 8편의 단편집이 이것에 해당한다.
1920년대에 들어오면 이번은 장편에 힘을 쏟기 시작해 내용도 별세계만을 말하는 것이 아니라, 현실 세계와도 교착하는 이세계를 그린 작품을 발표하게 되는데 처녀 장편으로 1922 년경의 「Don Rodriguez: Chronicls of Shadow Valley /그림자 골짜기 이야기」를 시작해 「The King of Elfland's Daughter/앨프랜드의 왕녀」 「The Charwoman's Shadow/마법사의 제자」등의 걸작이 이 시기의 작품에 해당합니다.
그 후 1930년경부터 만년에 이르러서는, 지금까지의 환상적인 요소를 배제하고 리얼리즘의 수법으로 현실 세계를 그린 작품을 발표하게 된다.
아일랜드의 현실 생활을 그린 장편 「현녀의 저주」나 경쾌한 유머를 섞은 유쾌한 tall tales를 다수 집필해 인기를 끌었으며 1931년부터 만년까지 계속 되는 시리즈가 된 죠켄즈의 단편군이 이 시기의 작품이 된다.
제1기, 제2기가 환타지 작가로서의 단세이니를 가리키고 있으며 특히 제1기의 시적이고 흐르는 화려한 문체로 쓰여진 단편군은, J.R.R.톨킨 H.P 러브크라프트, 아서.C.클럭 등 후세의 환타지,호러, SF작가들에게 다대한 영향을 주고 있다.
