- The Russian and British strategies to get control of Afghanistan became known as the Great Game.
- In 1855, thirteen years after the British disaster in Afghanistan, Dost Mohammad signed a treaty with Britain. This treaty promised that he would not attack the British, and that the British would stay out of Afshanistan.


Wandering Through Africa

- David Livingstone
- In 1857, Living-stone wrote a book about his explorations called Missionary Travels.
- In 1858, the government of Great Britain gave David Livingstone the official job of finding trade routes into Africa for British traders.
- David Livingstone had hoped to make Africa stronger. But his maps of Africa would make it easier, years later, for England and other European countries to come into Africa and to treat it just as India had been treated: like a land to be aptured, conquered, and used.

- When Matthew Perry came back to Japan in 1854, the Japanese agreed to sign a trade treaty with the United States. Not too long after, France, Spain, and other European countries signed their own treaties with Japan.

- Nicholas I, the czar of Russia wanted to take Constantinople for sailing down into the Mediterranean Sea
- England’s fear of Russia

-> France and Britain vs Russia
-> France and Britain were determined to capture the Russian city of Sevastopol in the Crimean Peninsula which was in the north of the Black Sea.
-> In 1856, Alexander, Nicholas’s son, agreed to sign a peace treaty called the Peace of Paris. Russia would get Sevastopol back, but only after returning Turkish land to the Turks. And Russia had to promise not to keep any warships in the Black Sea.

As you read, you will see, again and again, the same pattern acted out: A person or a group of people rejects injustice by rebelling and seizing the reins of power. As soon as those reins are in the hands of the rebels, the rebels become the establishment, the victims become the tyrants, the freedom-fighters become the dictators. The man who shouts for equality in one decade purges, in the next decade, those who shout against him. Boiling history down to its simplest outline so that beginning scholars can grasp it brings this repetition into stark relief.

the Story of the World 3 완독

드디어 3권 완독! 2월 16일부터 4월 16일까지 장장 2달 걸렸다;;;

2월과 3월에 <제2의 성>도 읽느라, 하루에 한 챕터 못 읽고 반 챕터씩 읽기도 해서 오래 걸렸다. 그래도 6월까지 4권 완독 가능하겠다. 4권이 제일 두껍기는 하지만!

매일 읽은 챕터를 다이어리 연간 캘린더에 열심히 표시하기. 그냥 읽기만 했으면 하다가 흐지부지 되었을지도. 아니, 우리 둘째 때문에 그만두지도 못했겠지 ㅎㅎ. 3권 읽고 이틀 쉬겠다니 벌써 책장에서 4권을 꺼내 들고 하루만 쉬고 다시 읽으라고 ㅠㅠ;

노트에 수기로 정리하던 건 어느 순간 그만 두고. 북플에 제목이나 주요 문장만 발췌하는 수준.

나중에 다시 읽으며 챕터 별로 추가 정리하면 좋겠다.

3권은 1555년부터 1850년까지의 약 300년 기간 동안의 역사에 대한 이야기다.

유럽에서 국가가 형성되고 산업혁명이 일어나고 시민혁명이 일어나고 나폴레옹이라는 문제적 인물이 나타나는 시기, 아메리카 대륙에서는 식민 지배를 벗어나기 위한 전쟁이 벌어지고, 드디어 미국연합이 탄생하고 미국의 영토가 점점 서쪽으로 확장해 나가는 시기, 쇄국정책을 펼치던 중국이 강제적으로 영국을 포함한 유럽국가들과 조약을 맺던 시기.

영국과 미국에서 노예매매를 금지하고, 영국은 노예제도 없앴으나, 미국은 여전히 남부지역의 농장 유지를 위해 노예제를 유지하고 있던 시기.

역사를 한마디로 압축하면 인간의 영토 확장, 영토 확보를 위한 전쟁, 폭력 밖에 남지 않는 것 같아 씁쓸하다. 4권에서도 미국 남북전쟁, 양차 전쟁, 대학살 등 또 얼마나 격변이 이루어질 것인지.
