Seven more U.S. soldiers have been killed in Iraq by roadside bomb explosions, the military announced today.
The deaths, in two separate incidents, came amid a wave of killing and conflict among Iraqis following the bombing of a Shiite holy shrine in Samarra yesterday. The military did not mention any link between the U.S. deaths and the current troubles.
Three of the soldiers died northeast of the town of Balad, 15 miles north of Baghdad, yesterday when their vehicle struck an "improvised explosive device," according to a military news release.
The three were with the 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division.
Four troops from the 101st Airborne Division were killed near Hawjah on the same day when their vehicle, on combat patrol, struck a roadside bomb, the military said. Hawjah is 50 miles north of Baghdad.
The military statements provided no further detail.
