신약의 윤리적 비전

775쪽에 24,000원!! 읽기에 두꺼운 분량이요, 사기에 비싼 금액이다. 조금 망설여진다. 그래도 Christianity Today 지가 선정한 '20세기 가장 중요한 종교 서적 100권' 가운데 한 권이라니 용기가 난다.

책을 읽어본다. 학문적이면서도 실천적인 책이다. 신약 윤리학에 관심있는 신학생과 신약 윤리 설교를 하기 원하는 목회자에게 더 없이 좋은 내용이다. (이 책을 통해 신약신학이 신약윤리학으로 발전하는 인상을 받는다.)

이 책은 4부로 구성되었다. 1부 서술과제는 신약 윤리에 관련된 주요 본문들을 주해한다. 2부 종합과제는 주해 작업을 한 여러 본문들에서 통일적인 의미를 찾는다. 저자는 3가지의 주요 이미지로 신약 윤리를 바라본다. 공동체, 십자가, 새창조가 그것이다. 3부 해석과제는 과거의 본문과 현재의 생활과를 연결한다. 저자의 말대로 신약의 메시지를 개념적으로 적용한다. 4부 실천과제는 성경의 윤리적 규범을 오늘의 삶에서 어떻게 구체화 할 수 있는지를 밝힌다. 신약의 메시지를 행동으로 적용하게 한다. 시험사례로 다섯가지를 다룬다. 정당방위를 위한 폭력이 과연 성경적인가? 성경은 이혼과 재혼에 대하여 무어라고 말하는가? 동성애는 과연 죄악인가? 이들을 공동체에서 추방해야 하나? 반유대주의와 인종갈등은 어떻게 극복해야하나? 성경은 낙태에 대해 침묵하는데 우리는 어떻게 대처해야하나? 이 책을 읽어보라. 성경적인 답변을 얻을 수 있다.

역자는 듀크대학교에서 박사학위를 한 유승원 목사다. 스승의 책을 번역하였으니 저자의 의도를 잘 살렸음은 물론이다. 출판사는 IVP다. 믿을 수 있는 출판사다. 책을 읽다가 한군데 정도서 오타를 발견했다. 이 정도는 양반이다.

한 가지 아쉬운 점은 이렇게 두꺼운 책을 양장으로 제본하지 않았다. 아마 책 값을 낮추기 위해서리라. 내 책은 그만 제본이 떨어지고 말았다.

저자의 또 다른 책 고린도전서 주석(현대성서주석)을 기대해본다. (이 글은 2002년 12월 16일 라이프북에 실었던 서평입니다.)

가던 길을 멈추고 되돌아 보게 하는 책

껍데기 목회자는 가라
유진 피터슨 외 지음, 차성구 옮김 / 좋은씨앗 / 2001년 7월

이 책은 저자들이 리젠트 신학교 목회자 컨퍼런스에서 The Unnessary Paster(불필요한 목회자)란 제목으로 강연한 내용을 책으로 옮긴 것이다. 유진은 목회서신을, 마르바는 에베소서를 가지고 목회자와 평신도 사역자를 향해 성경적인 목회신학을 정립시키고 있다. 나는 이 책을 읽으며 세 번 놀랐다.

먼저, 책값에 신선한 충격을 받았다. 392쪽에 오천원?!(만 오천원이 아니고?) 출판사측은 더 많은 목회자와 사역자가 읽었으면 하는 마음으로 이렇게 책정했다 한다. 기독교 서적이 일반 서적보다 조금 비싼 점을 감안하면 놀라운 일이다. 주머니가 가벼우니 마음까지 한결 여유로와 진다. 출판사측의 헌신에 박수갈채를 보내며 꼭 열매를 맺기 바란다.

그리고 제목만으로도 몸과 마음이 섬뜩해진다. 목사 안수 받은 지 3년째. 나는 늘 삯꾼(직업적인 종교인)은 아닌지 반문해 본다. 그리고 이것을 늘 일깨워줄 만한 책을 찾고 있었다. 바로 이 책이다 싶다. 나는 이 제목만 보고도 주님과의 첫 만남을 회상해 보았고, 처음 목회 시작할 때의 마음 가짐을 되새겨 보았다. 이 제목은 정말 마력이 있다. 번역자가 얄궂고도 고맙다. 처음 목회 나온 후배에게 선물해야겠다.

무엇보다도 내용에 머리가 숙여진다. 유진은 신학교는 이성주의가 차지하고 있고, 교회는 기능주의가 유행처럼 번지고 있다고 한탄한다. 정말 그렇다. 세속적인 학문 이론이 성경의 권위를 잠식하려 하고 있고, 우리나라의 경우 일부 목회자는 교회를 깜짝 쇼를 연출하는 이벤트 회사정도로 변질시키고 있다. 안타까운 일이다. 유진은 '화학비료와 제초제'의 비유를 통해서 이것을 사용하면 처음에는 생산량이 현저히 증가하나, 시간이 흐르면 농토는 황폐화된다고 말한다. 그제서야 사람들은 유기농법의 소중함을 깨닫는다. 바로 이성주의와 기능주의가 화학비료요 제초제다. 그러나 성경은 유기농법이다. 성경만이 진정한 목회신학의 지침서이다. 여기서 저자의 사상을 발견하게 된다. 성경과 신학에 바탕을 둔 영성! 이것이 유진의 한결같은 아우성이다. 아무튼 근시안적이고도 조급한 사고 방식을 가지고 있는 한국 목회자의 목회신학 클리닉을 이 책이 담당하리라 믿는다. 나는 집에 앉아 여름 목회자 세미나를 다녀온 유익을 얻었다. Baylor Names the 12 Most Effective Preachers

 WACO, Texas - Baylor University recently named 12 individuals as the most effective preachers in the English-speaking world, according to a worldwide survey.
Each of the 12 preachers will be invited to participate in conferences or to deliver sermons on the Baylor campus during the 1996-97 academic year and to receive the newly created "Baylor Great Preachers" award.
Baylor's desire to examine the nature of effective preaching is drawn from its traditional relationship with Baptist churches, its commitment to preparing ministry students and the opening last year of the George W. Truett Theological Seminary, according to Dr. Larry Lyon, professor of sociology at Baylor, who coordinated surveys to determine the most effective preachers.
Lyon and Dr. Glenn Jonas of Campbell University designed two separate surveys. The first sought to determine the qualities of an effective preacher, and the second determined who best incorporates those qualities in their preaching ministry.
"In some respects, the definition of what is effective preaching is just as important as the determination of who is the most effective," Lyon said.
The first survey was mailed to homiletics professors asking them to describe the qualities associated with effective preaching. The responses were compiled and grouped into seven broad categories. These categories were the basis of the second survey used to nominate the most effective preachers.
A total of 341 seminary professors and editors of religious periodicals responded to the second mail-out survey, and they nominated 1,548 preachers as the most effective preachers. The top 12 names are:

* The Rev. Walter J. Burghardt S.J., is senior fellow of the Woodstock Theological Center in Washington, D.C. He has been president of the American Theological Society, managing editor of Theological Studies, Theologian-in-Residence at Georgetown University, and he has written numerous books and articles on preaching.

* Dr. Fred Craddock is the Bandy Distinguished Professor of Preaching and New Testament, emeritus, in the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. He has served pastorates in Tennessee and Oklahoma and has lectured and published extensively on preaching the gospel.

* Dr. James Forbes is the senior minister of the Riverside Church in New York City. He is the first African-American minister to serve a pastorate of one of the largest multicultural congregations in the nation. The Riverside Church is a 2,400 member church affiliated with American Baptist Churches and the United Church of Christ. Before coming to Riverside in 1989, he pastored in Richmond Va., and Wilmington, N.C., and has served at Union Theological Seminary and Auburn Theological Seminary.

* The Rev. Billy Graham now works through the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. Ordained in 1940 by the Southern Baptist Convention, he has led crusades throughout the world and conducts his ministry through weekly radio programs, television specials, a newspaper column, Decision magazine, and World Wide Pictures. Graham is regularly listed by the Gallup organization of the "Ten Most Admired Men in the World" and has appeared on the covers of Time, Newsweek and Life.

* Dr. Thomas Long is the Francis Landey Patton Professor of Preaching and Worship at Princeton Theological Seminary. He began his professional career as a Presbyterian pastor in Atlanta but has served on the faculty at various seminaries for the last 20 years. Long is the editor of Theology Today and senior homiletics editor of the New Interpreter's Bible. He has written many books and articles on preaching, including "Beavis and Butt-Head Get Saved."

* The Rev. Lloyd Ogilvie is chaplain of the U.S. Senate and pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Hollywood, Calif. He hosts a nationally syndicated radio and television program, "Let God Love You." Ogilvie has authored numerous books and articles on preaching and is general editor of the 32-volume Communicator's Commentary.

* Dr. Haddon Robinson is the Harold John Ockenga Distinguished Professor of Preaching at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. Previously, he had served as president of the Denver Conservative Baptist Seminary and a professor of homiletics at Dallas Theological Seminary. He was president of the Evangelical Theological Society and has written a number of works on preaching, including Biblical Preaching, which is currently used at more than 100 seminaries and Bible colleges.

* Dr. John R. Stott is rector emeritus at All Souls Church in Langham Place, London, and president of the London Institute for Contemporary Christianity. He was chaplain to the Queen between 1959 and 1991 and currently serves as extra chaplain. Stott is president of the Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship and has initiated a strong and continuing third world ministry. He has written extensively on biblically-based preaching.

* Dr. Charles Swindoll is president of the Dallas Theological Seminary. He has held pastorates in Dallas and Irving, Texas; Waltham, Mass.; and Fullerton, Calif. Swindoll's ministry is shared internationally through numerous books and articles as well as an extensive cassette tape distribution system and daily radio broadcast, "Insight for Living." He was honored as Clergyman of the Year by the Religious Heritage of America.

* The Rev. Barbara Brown Taylor is rector at Grace-Calvary Episcopal Church, Clarkesville, Ga. Previously she spent nine years in urban ministry at All Saints' Church in Atlanta, Ga. She has taught at Candler School of Theology, the Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest, McCormick Seminary and the College of Preachers in Washington, D.C. She has written four books, including The Preaching Life and Gospel Medicine, and serves on the editorial board of the Living Pulpit.

* Dr. Gardner C. Taylor is pastor emeritus at Concord Baptist Church of Christ, Brooklyn, NY. He has lectured on preaching at Colgate University, Harvard University, Yale University and seminaries across the nation. Gardner has been called "the dean of the nation's black preachers" by Time, "one of the greatest preachers in American History" in Ebony, and "the greatest preacher living, dead or unborn" in The Christian Century.

* Dr. William Willimon is dean of the chapel and professor of Christian Ministry at Duke University. He preaches each Sunday in the Duke Chapel and directs the campus ministry programs at Duke. He was named the first Distinguished Alumnus of the Yale Divinity School and serves on the editorial boards of The Christian Century, Pulpit Digest, Preaching, The Wittenburg Door and Leadership. He has written 37 books, including What's Right With the Church and Worship as Pastoral Care. His Pulpit Resource is used weekly by more than 8,000 pastors in the U.S., Canada and Australia.
