누가 여왕이 될까요?

여자아이 셋, 일단 그림책에서 보기 드문 가족 구성이 아닐까?
형제나 자매, 남매 둘인 경우가 아마 가장 많을 것이다.
아이들이 티격태격 싸우는 일상을 잘 표현했다. 아이들의 심리 또한 간단하지만 정확하게 보여진다.
셋 중 최고이고 싶은 마음, 서로에 대한 질투심, 자기 과시욕, 이런 것들 때문에 싸우느라 엄마의 생일을 망쳐버린 아이들, 저희 나름대로 해결책을 찾는 모습이 기특하다. 
아이들이 자주 속을 썩이지만 이렇게 한 번씩 이쁜 짓(?)을 하는 걸 보며 행복을 느끼는 것이 부모인데, 그런 부모의(여기서는 주로 엄마의) 심정도 잘 느껴진다.
마침 나는 둘째를 기다리고 있는 중이어서 아이와 함께 이 책을 보며 동생에 관한 이야기를 자연스럽게 할 수 있었다. 셋이 한 방을 쓰며 각자 다른 놀이를 하고 있는 개성 강한 아이들 그림을 보면서 동생이 태어나면 너도 이렇게 동생과 한 방을 쓸 거라고, 소리를 지르며 싸우는 그림을 보면서는 어, 싸우네? 라고 말해서 "싸우면 안 돼~~"라는 대답을 끌어내고(이거 너무 교훈 주입인 듯..ㅠㅠ), 그런 식으로. 후후.
끝부분에 아빠가 바지를 입는 뒷모습이 그려져 있는데 흰 줄무늬 빨간 팬티가 보이는 그 엉거주춤이 (사실적이라) 눈길을 끈다.

"엄마는 우리를 하나하나 꼬옥 안아 주며, 소원이 이루어졌다고 기뻐했어요. 오늘이 엄마 생일은 아니지만, 뭐 어때요? 엄마가 우리 때문에 웃었다는 것이 중요하죠."

그래, 웃는 것, 그게 행복이지.

뉴베리 상이란?





미국 내에서 전년도에 출간된 어린이 책 가운데 가장 뛰어난 공헌을 한 작가에게 수여하는 상입니다. 미국 도서관 협회가 주관하며, 수상 작가는 미국 국민이어야 하고 미국에 거주하는 사람이어야 한다는 규정이 있습니다.

독서에 대한 어린이들의 관심을 높이고, 아동문학가들의 창작욕을 북돋우기 위해 제정된 상으로 미국에서 가장 오래된 아동문학상입니다. 1921년 6월 21일 미국도서관협회 아동문학분과회의에서 멜쳐(Frederic G. Melcher)가 처음 제안하였고, 이듬해부터 시상하기 시작했습니다.

수상자에게 메달을 수여하기 때문에 뉴베리상보다는 '뉴베리 메달'로 더 알려져 있고, 이름은 18세기 영국의 서적상인 뉴베리(John Newbery)에서 유래한 것으로 그를 기리기 위해 제정된 상입니다.

대상은 소설, 시집, 논픽션 등이며, 시상식은 매년 초에 개최됩니다. 역시 멜쳐가 제안해 1937년부터 한 해동안 출판된 가장 훌륭한 어린이 그림책을 대상으로 매년 시상하는 '칼데콧상(Caldecott Award)과 함께 미국의 가장 권위 있는 아동문학상입니다.

칼데콧 상이란?

19세기 후반에 활약한 근대 그림책의 아버지로 불리는 영국의 그림책 작가 랜돌프 칼데콧을 기념하기 위해 1938년 제정된 그림책 상이다. 미국 도서관 협회가 주관하며 미국에서 출간된 전년도 그림책 가운데 가장 뛰어난 작품을 그린 화가에게 수여한다. 칼데콧 상은 매년 한 권의 그림책에 주는 최우수상이며 칼데콧 명예상은 1~5권의 그림책에 주는 우수상이다.

그림 자체의 예술적 측면 뿐 아니라 이야기와 주제를 그림을 통해 효과적으로 표현하는 방식 등을 고려하여 최고 점수를 얻은 작품을 수상작으로 선정하게 되는데 뉴베리상와 더불어 아동문학에 있어서 최고의 영예로 그 권위를 인정받고 있다.

 내가 아는 거? 내가 말할 수 있는 거요? 경험으로? 관찰을 통해? 기억에 의해? 직관으로? 인생을 통해 내가 배운 거요? 책이나 항간에 떠도는 사적인 소문?

 남자는 우리보다 훨씬 더 크게 라디오를 듣는다는 것. 문을 쾅 소리나게 닫는다는 것. 벽장을 닫지 않는다는 것. 냄비, 접시, 굴 먹는 포크가 어디에 정돈되어 있는지 모른다는 것. 중요한 날짜를 잊어버린다는 것. 그다지 결점이 많지 않다는 것. 탄생을 느끼지 못하고, 죽도록 고통스러워하며, 삶을 잊는다는 것. 어둠 속에서 혼란에 빠진다는 것. 멀리 있는 건 잘 보지만 냉장고 안의 버터는 찾지 못한다는 것. 우정에 충실하다는 것. 다리를 벌리고 앉는다는 것. 하루에 평균 칠천 번 제스처를 사용한다는 것(여자는 이만 번). 사랑과 섹스를 분리한다는 것. 치약 뚜껑을 절대로 닫지 않는다는 것. 비가 와도 우산을 쓰기 싫어한다는 것. 덕을 갈망할 수는 있어도 진리를 갈망하지는 않는다는 것. 수학적인 추리에 더 재능이 있다는 것. 공간 속에서 방향을 잘 분간한다는 것. 잘 울지 않는다는 것. 거절을 토대로 스스로를 구성한다는 것. 남자에게 감수성은 가장 폐쇄된 부분이라는 것. 불안정하다는 것. 자기 감정을 보여주기를 몹시 싫어한다는 것. 다르게 행동할 수 있더라도 그것보다 자신에게 더 많은 기쁨을 주는 일이 있다면 그 일을 안 하고는 못 배긴다는 것. 발기하지 않는 것을 두려워한다는 것. 자신의 여성적인 부분을 전보다 더 잘 받아들인다는 것. 쇼핑할 목록의 반을 잊어버린다는 것(목록을 가져가지 않았으니까). 신문을 다 읽고 나면 바닥에 그대로 둔다는 것. "내가 그녀를 기쁘게 할 수 있을까? 그녀가 날 사랑하려고 할까?" 하고 생각한다는 것. 입어보지도 않고 옷을 산다는 것. 미용제품에 더이상 무관심하지 않다는 것. 먼지를 닦기 위해 걸레질을 하기보다는 기꺼이 청소기를 돌린다는 것. 아기 기저귀를 갈아주는 것보다는 아기 산책시키는 걸 더 좋아한다는 것. 잊지 않고 어머니에게 전화한다는 것. 모두 노예라는 것. 연구할 가치가 없다는 것. 세상이 그들의 마음을 냉혹하게 만든다는 것. 그들이 서로 속지 않는다면 사회에서 오래 살지 못하리라는 것. 변화하는 중이라는 것. 조처를 따르는 것보다는 조처를 취하는 것에 더 능숙하다는 것. 은혜와 모욕에 대한 기억을 잊기 일쑤라는 것. 질긴 스타킹을 좋아한다는 것. 갈색 머리 여자를 더 좋아한다는 것. 자기 의무에 속하는 일에 대해 무기력하게 행동한다는 것. 자살에 실패하는 일이 거의 없다는 것. 조용한 것을 동경한다는 것. 그게 남자라는 것. 그들은 무정함, 배은망덕함, 부당함, 자존심, 그들 자신에 대한 사랑, 다른 사람에 대한 망각을 보여준다는 것. 그들은 그렇게 만들어졌고, 그게 그들의 본성이라는 것.

몇몇 문장에서 어쩔 수 없이 떠오르는 옆지기의 모습에 쿡쿡 웃음이 난다.
모든 남자가 다 이렇진 않겠지. 그러나 대체로 맞다. 그들은 그렇게 만들어졌다. (문화 차이가 조금 느껴지지만 프랑스 남자들이나 한국 남자들이나 거기서 거기다. )

사람이란, 어른이 된 사람이란, 그 사람의 성격은 대부분 그의 성장환경에서 비롯된 것이기 때문에 그가 알고 있든 그렇지 못하든 간에 짧은 시간에 바뀔 수는 없다, 그러므로 그 사람이 어떤 나쁜 습관과 행동을 갖고 있더라도 일단은 이해를 해 주어야 한다, 는 말을 들었다. 그렇다. 그러나 이해는 하되 용서는 안 되는 경우도 있지 않은가. 그 사람이 저언혀 바뀔 생각을 안 한다면, 아니, 그저 저만이 옳고 자기가 세상의 중심이며, 함께 사는 사람은 다 시종이며, 함부로 대하는 것에 일말의 부끄러움도 없는 그런 남자라면?

세상 살이에서 주워 듣는 이야기 속 남자, 바로 내 옆에 있는 남자, 행동만이 우연히 눈에 띄는 모르는 남자, 그들은 참 어렵다.
이응준의 소설 속에, 정확하진 않지만, 이런 말이 나오지. "누군가를 안다는 건 무서운(두려운?) 일"이라고.

최근 읽은 동화책 몇 권

  <하늘에서 온 편지>
  아들을 잃고 거의 정신이 나가버린 엄마와, 그를 지켜보는 딸,
  그리고 정신대 할머니 이야기. 
  주제가 막연하다는 생각이 든다. 아이들에게 어려운 단어들도 많고.
  삽화, 역시 마음에 안 든다. (푸헐, 마음에 안 들면 워쩔껴...ㅠㅠ)
  정신대 할머니 이야기를 위해 책 대부분을 차지하고 있는 엄마와 딸 이야기가
  곁들임 같다는 느낌.

  유난히 짧은 단편동화들, 보기 드문 책이다.
  짧으면서도 할 말은 다 한다.  '선의' 지향적이긴 하지만. 
  뭐 그래도 모두가 행복한 건 좋은 일이니까.
  하지만 예를 들어 "바브라 아저씨의 왼손" 같은 경우, 바브라 아저씨(외국인 노동자)가
  다운이의 목숨을 구해주지 않았다면, 과연 다운이 엄마 아빠가 그를 채용할 마음이 있었을까.

  재미있는 그림이 돋보인다.
  과학 동화라 하기에는 조금 가벼운 감이 있지만, 아이들이 쉽게 읽을 수 있을 듯.
  '이건 원래 좀 황당한 이야기야' 하는 생각으로 읽어야 재미있다.
  담배를 많이 피우는 아버지들이 읽어도 좋지 않을까? ㅎㅎㅎ
 




  <아기도깨비와 오토 제국>
  한바탕 꿈속의 일이라는 전형적인 구성이지만, 현대인을 비꼬는 오토 제국이 재밌다.
  개성과 자아 없이 고만고만하게 다 똑같은 사람들, 그런 교육 방식, 그렇게 이어지는 사회.

  딱 이 동화의 주제가 될 만한 구절을 그대로 인용한다.

  "'노랑집'이 무엇 하는 덴지, 어디 있는지 도무지 몰랐지만 걱정할 것 하나 없었다. 발이 걸어가는 대로 걷고 입이 말하는 대로 말하면 되니까, 정말이지 만고에 걱정할 일이 없었다. 오치구 박사는 그제야 왜 그들이 '영원한 낙원 오토 제국'이라고 떠들어 대는지 조금 알 것도 같았다. 하긴 걱정과 근심이 없으니 '낙원'이라고 할 만도 하지!
 그러나 사람이 살아가는 데 아무런 걱정도 근심도 없다면 즐거움과 기쁨 또한 없을 것 아닌가? 그리고 사람은 어디까지나 자기 생각대로 움직이고 말해야 한다. 누가 시키는 대로만 한다면 그것은 사람이 아니라 꼭두각시일 뿐이다. 꼭두각시한테는 아무런 근심도 걱정도 물론 없다. 그에게는 슬픔도 없고 따라서 기쁨도 없다. 그러니까 그에게는 삶이 없는 것이다. 삶이란 슬픔과 기쁨이 날줄과 씨줄이 되어 짜는 옷감과 같기 때문이다."
