월터 스콧(Walter Scott)은 스코틀랜드 태생의 영국 작가로<최후의 음유시인의 노래>, <마미온>, <호수의 여인>의 3대 서사시로 유명합니다. 1814년 익명으로 역사소설 <웨이벌리 Waverly>를 발표했는데 크게 호평을 받았습니다. 이후 익명으로 계속 소설을 발표했으며 1819년 <아이반호>를 출간했습니다.

■ 작품 소개

아이반호는 중세 영국을 배경으로 한 기사 아이반호의 무용담입니다. 아이반호는 그의 부친이 돌봐주고 있는 앵글로색슨계 귀족 로위너 공주와 사랑하나 공주를 색슨 왕족에게 출가시키려고 하는 아버지에게 의절 당합니다. 그는 사자왕(獅子王) 리처드를 따라 십자군에 종군하는데 왕의동생이 노르만 귀족과 결탁하여 왕위 찬탈을 모의한다는 소식을 듣습니다. 아이반호는 아슈비에서 열린 마상 시합에 나가 다른 기사들을 이기고 로위너 공주로부터 영관(榮冠)을 받습니다.
