20세기 초 영국의 작은 마을에 우주에서 날아온 물체가 착륙합니다. 우주선 안에서 기괴한 괴물이 나타나 살인 광선을 쏘아대고, 화성인들의 지구점령이 시작됩니다. 동명 소설을 원작으로 하여 오손 웰스가 만든 라디오 드라마는 1938년 10월 30일, 할로윈 특집으로 미국의 CBS 라디오 방송을 통해 공개되었습니다. 이 생방송은 연출임에도 불구하고수많은청취자들이 실제로화성인들이 침공했다고 믿게 만들었습니다.
