Sir Walter Elliot, of Kellynch Hall, in Somersetshire, was a man who, for his own amusement, never took up any book but the Baronetage; there he found occupation for an idle hour, and consolation in a distressed one; there his faculties were roused into admiration and respect, by contemplating the limited remnant of the earliest patents; there any unwelcome sensations, arising from domestic affairs changed naturally into pity and contempt as he turned over the almost endless creations of the last century; and there, if every other leaf were powerless, he could read his own history with an interest which never failed.

■ 작품 소개

<<설득>>은 제인 오스틴이 남긴 마지막 소설 입니다. 빅토리아 시대에 팽배한 물질주의와 속물근성에 대한 풍자,그리고 이 시대를 살아가는 여인의 삶에 대한 고찰이 담겨 있습니다. 이야기는 19살의 앤 엘리엇이 프레데릭과 파혼한 후 7년이 지난 시점에서 시작합니다. 프레데릭은 영리하고 자신감 넘치고 야망 있는 청년이었지만 부유하지 못했고 그럴듯한 집안 배경을 가지고 있지 못했습니다. 앤의 아버지 윌터와 그녀의 언니 엘리자벳은 프레데릭이 앤의 배우자가 되기에 자격 미달이라고 생각합니다. 결국 가족들에게 설득당해 프레데릭과 파혼한 연은 7년 뒤 그를 다시 만나게 됩니다. 그는 재력을 갖춘 당당한 해군 장성이 되었지만 앤의 가문은 재정적으로 몰락해 어려움을 겪고 있었습니다.
