■ 작품 소개

아담과 이브의 낙원 추방, 악마들의 왕인 사탄의 반역과 몰락을 다룬 밀턴의 <<실낙원>>은 단테의 <<신곡>>과 더불어 인류 최고의 종교 서사시로 평가받고 있습니다. 하나님과의 싸움에서 패한 사탄읏 동료 악마들과 신에 대한 복수를 맹세합니다. 사탄과 악마들은 신의 피조물인 인간을 이용해 복수하기로 하고, 이브를 유혹하여 선악과를 따먹게 합니다. 공간적으로는 에덴동산과 천국, 지옥을 오가고 시간적으로는 인류 이전부터 그리스도 재림까지를 다루는 엄청난 스케일을 가진 대하 서사시입니다. 밀턴은 <<실낙원>>을 통해 인간의 자유의지와 원죄, 신의 징벌과 구원이라는 심오한 종교적 문제를 이야기하고 있습니다.
