존 밀턴은 1608년 영국 런던에서 태어나 케임브리지 대학에서 문학을 전공했습니다. 밀턴은 크롬웰 공화국의 핵심인사로 활동했는데, 이 때문에 1660년 왕정복고 후 가혹한 정치적 탄압을 받았습니다. 감옥에 갇혀 있는 동안 <<실낙원>>, <<복낙원>>, <<투사 삼손>> 등 3대 거작을 집필하였습니다.
