It was four o‘clock when the ceremony was over and the carriages began to arrive. There had been a crowd following all the way, owing to the exuberance of Marija Berczynskas. The occasion rested heavily upon Mariza‘ s broad shoulders-- it was her task to see that all things went in due vform, and after the best home traditions; and, flying wildly hitter and thither, bowling every one out of the way, and scolding and exhorting all day with her tremendous voice, Marija was too eager to see that others conformed to the priorities to consider them herself.

■ 저자소개

업튼 싱클레어는 1878년 주류 판매업자의 아들로 태어났습니다. 15살 때부터 생계를 위해 소설을 쓰기 시작한 이 불우한 작가는 큰 주목을 받지 못하다가 1906년 시카고 식육 공장 지대의 비인간적 상황을 리얼리즘 기법으로 적나라하게 묘사한 <<정글>>을 출간해유명작가가 되었습니다. 정치에도 투신했으나 성공을 거두지는 못했습니다. 1943년 퓰리처상을 수상했습니다.

■ 작품 소개

<<정글>>은 1906년 출간된 사회 고발소설로 20세기 초 미국 도살장의 환경과 노동자들의 현실을 폭로하며 미국 사회에 큰 파장을 불러 일으켰던 문제작입니다. 시카고 식육 공장 지대의 비인간적인 상황을 생생하게 묘사하여 미국식품의약국(FDA)이 설립되는 계기가 되었습니다. 20세기 초 ‘아메리칸 드림‘을 꿈꾸었던 리투아니아 청년 유르기스는 잔인한 자본의 정글인 식육 공장에서 비참한 경험을 하게 됩니다. 고기 찌꺼기를 갈아 통조림을 만들고, 상한 고기를 팔고, 쥐들이 우글거리는 시카고 도축장의 모습은 독자들을 경악하게 했습니다.
