■ 작품 소개

<<파우스트>>는 괴테가 평생에 걸쳐 집필한 희곡으로 총 2부로 되어 있으며, 전편(全篇) 1만 2111행에 달하는 대작입니다. 이 작품은 천상과 지상의 교통, 참회와 구원, 신의 섭리와 은총에 대해 다루고 있습니다. 악마 메피스토펠레스는 노학자 파우스트를 유혹할 수 있다고 신과 내기를 합니다. 파우스트는 악마 메피스토펠레스와 영혼을 넘기는 계약을 맺고 젊음을 얻습니다. 관념적인 학문의 세계에서 벗어나 이성과 쾌락을 즐기며 세속적인 성공에 취한 파우스트의 영혼은 사망하는 순간에 메피스토펠레스에게 접수될 뻔 했으나, 신의 종인 천사들의 등장으로 구원받습니다. <<파우스트>>에서 괴테는 사람은 어떠한 미망(迷妄)의 길을 걷더라도 인간으로서의 노력을 계속한다면 결국 구원을 받는다는 메시지를 전하고 있습니다.

■ 저자 소개

제임스 놀스는 1831년 영국에서 태어나 유니버시티 칼리지에서 건축을 전공했지만 문학을 더 좋아했습니다. 놀스는 편집자로서 재능을 발휘하여 1870년 <<동시대>>의 편집을 맡았고,1877년에는 <<19세기>>를 창간 했습니다.이들 잡지는 시사 평론지로서 당시 영국사회에 큰 ‘영향력을 행사했습니다. 1860년에 아서 왕과 원탁의 기사들‘을 출판했습니다. - P3
