[NIV] 19 Then some Jews came from Antioch and Iconium and won the crowd over. They stoned Paul anddragged him outside the city, thinking he was dead. - P136

21 They preached the gospel in that city and won alargenumber of disciples. Then they returned to Lystra, Ico-nium and Antioch, 22 strengthening the disciples andencouraging them to remain true to the faith. "We mustgo through many hardships to enter the kingdom ofGod," they said. - P136

27 On arriving there, they gathered the church togetherand reported all that God had done through them andhow he had opened a door of faith to the Gentiles. - P137

Some Jews stir up a crowd to stone Paul. They leave him outside the citythinking he is dead, but he is not.  - P137

Paul and Barnabas continue their travels toencourage and strengthen churches. They appoint elders and commit themto God. - P137

 They sail back to Antioch and share what God has done through themand how he has opened the Gentiles‘ hearts to have faith. - P137

Paul is stoned in Lystra after some Jews from Antioch and Iconiumpersuade the crowds that his preaching should be condemned.  - P138

Thestoning is so brutal that they are certain Paul is dead. But unexpectedly,
Paul getsback up and goes to Derbe with Barnabas the following day,
to preach the gospel there.  - P138

They then return to Lystra, Iconium, andAntioch, to encourage the believers and remind them that they willface suffering, just as Paul did.  - P138

In our world that is increasingly hostileto the gospel, those who put their trust in it will inevitably be tested.
The world neither understands nor accepts the message of Christ so weshould not be surprised or dismayed when we experience opposition. - P138

Paul and Barnabas continue their journey and visit various cities-Pamphylia, Perga, Attalia and then head back to Antioch. It is inthis city that Paul and Barnabas were first sent out as missionaries andreceived God‘s grace to fulfill all the work they have completed until thispoint.  - P138

After arriving in Antioch, Paul and Barnabas share about all thework they have been able to accomplish, declaring how God‘s grace hasworked through them in their missionary endeavors.  - P138

It is always God‘sgrace that empowers the lives of His people, enabling us to do His will,
especially when we face suffering for choosing to follow Him.  - P138

Let ustake time to celebrate God‘s grace with other believers, to tell and hearwhat He has accomplished through us. - P138

The people at the synagogue invite Paul and Barnabas to speak again thenext Sabbath. When they do this, some Jews get jealous because there is alarge crowd, and they speak against them.  - P127

Paul and Barnabas tell them theyfirst spoke to them as the Lord commanded, but now they will preach to theGentiles. The gospel continues to spread as persecution increases. - P127

Paul and Barnabas are once again speaking in the synagogue, wherealmost the whole city is gathered. Encountering opposition from agroup of jealous Jews, Paul and Barnabas clearly state that their rejectionof God‘s message shows that they have chosen to disqualify themselvesfrom eternal life.  - P128

The situation is tense, but there is also great rejoicingon on  the part of the Gentiles upon learning that God‘s path to salvationand eternal life is also open to them.  - P128

The apostles, too, rejoice as theWord of the Lord spreads and souls are saved, even though oppositionfollows wherever they go.  - P128

Those who know the gospel lack no reason tobe glad. The good news of God‘s provision for our salvation brings joyto all who receive this free gift.  - P128

Let our rejoicing grow even greater as wesee more and more people hear the gospel and accept it. - P128

Dear Jesus, You brought salvation for everyone. Help us to stand firm in the truthand to prepare our hearts and minds to face all sorts of opposition and ridiculewith joy in the Holy Spirit. In Your name, amen. - P129

Paul and Barnabas preach at Iconium and some Jews and Gentiles plot againstthem. Once they find out about it, Paul and Barnabas flee to Lystra and Derbe.

Though the Greeks in Lystra had faith, their faith was misdirected. Itwas a faith that knew only the gods of the Greek pantheon. So, whenthey see Paul heal a lame man, they recognize that the power at work isdivine but fail to perceive its true source,  - P134

Paul and Barnabas thereforepoint them to the one true God, not only as the One who healed theman but also as the One who has always provided them with abun-dance and joy in His kindness.  - P134

When we give credit to God for theextraordinary as well as the ordinary things in life, we point others toHim.  - P134

미국에는 따로 애칭을 가진 도시들이 여럿 있습니다. 이를테면, 뉴욕은흔히 "빅 애플"로 알려져 있습니다. 또한 시카고는 "윈디시티", 라스베가스는 "씬(Sin) 시티", 디트로이트는 "모터 시티, 그리고 필라델피아는 "형제 사랑의 도시"로 알려져 있습니다. 사실, 마지막 애칭은 도시 이름의 문자적인의미를 풀이한 것입니다. "필라델피아"는 그리스어로 "형제 사랑"을 가리킵니다. - P370

이러한 이유로 고대 세계에서 사람들이 왕의 아들로 태어난 두 형제의사랑의 관계를 기념하고 칭송한 일이 있었습니다. 두 형제의 이름은 바로 에우메네스(Eumenes) 2세와 아탈루스(Attalus) 2세였습니다. 그들이 태어난 가문은 버가모 왕국을 통치했습니다. 이 버가모가 바로 그리스도께서 세 번째로설교하신 곳입니다.  - P370

이러한 맥락에서 세 번째 칭호는 예수님께서 빌라델비아의 그리스도인들에게 다음과 같이 말씀하시는 것과 같습니다. "너희가 비록 회당에서는쫓겨났지만 그렇다고 하나님의 나라에서 쫓겨난 것은 아니다. 내가 다윗의열쇠를 갖고 있다는 사실을 기억해라. 내가 바로 왕궁의 관리자라는 사실을기억해라. 나는 너희에게 문을 열어주어 하나님을 향해 마음껏 나아가고, 또자유롭게 하나님의 나라에 들어갈 수 있도록 해줄 것이다. 내가 여는 문은로마 당국이든 유대교 회당의 지도자이든 그 누구도 닫을 수 없을 것이다." - P374

이칭찬은 세절(verses) 반에 이르는 분량인데(3:8-11a), 이는 일곱 설교 속 다른 어떤 칭찬들보다 긴 분량입니다. 이처럼 긴 분량은 예수님께서 빌라델비아 교회를 얼마나 기뻐하셨는지를 보여줍니다. 예수님께서는 양손의 엄지를 치켜올리시며 다음과 같이 말씀하셨습니다. "훌륭하다, 빌라델비아 교회야! 너희는 극심한 박해 가운데서도 신앙 안에서 인내하였구나!" - P374

예수님께서 돌아오셔서 이 땅에 하나님의 나라가 회복되기 전에, 모든 그리스도인들은 "시험의 때를 맞게 될 것입니다. 여기서 우리는 "부와 건강의 복음"이 거짓말임을 깨닫게 됩니다. 그러한 복음은 예수님을 믿으면 모든 문제가사라지고, 절대로 병에 걸리지 않으며, 가난해 지지도 않고, 어떠한 시험도만나지 않을 것이라고 주장하는 거짓복음입니다.  - P377

빌라델비아의 성도들은그러한 복음이 결코 사실이 아님을, 고난의 체험을 통해 알고 있었습니다.
예수님의 이름을 선포하는 사람이라면 박해를 당할 것을 각오해야 합니다.
하지만 박해의 어려움 가운데서도 예수님은 "시험의 때로부터 너를 지킬 것이다"라고 말씀하시며 위로의 약속을 주십니다. 이는 정확히 말하면, 예수님께서 그 시험의 때로부터 "우리를 옮기신다"는 약속이 아니라, 시험의 때에
"우리를 보호하신다"라는 약속입니다. 예수님은 분명 우리 각 사람이 신앙안에서 견디도록 도우실 것입니다. - P377

그리스도께서 이미 승리를 거두셨기 때문입니다. 그리스도에게속한 우리 가운데 그분의 성령이 거하시기 때문입니다. 신앙에 따라 살아가는 도중 우리 앞을 가로막는 일이 발생하더라도 우리가 위축되거나 두려워하지 않도록 힘을 주시는 분은 거룩하신 성령입니다. - P380
